Hosting and care

Hosting is the easy part. Someone noticing when it breaks is the service.

Managed hosting for small business websites, with updates, backups, security and a person who answers. Aimed at owners who would rather not find out their site has been down since Tuesday from a customer.

Being straight with you

You can host a website for a few pounds a month, and sometimes you should

If you are comfortable applying updates, checking backups restore, and dealing with it yourself when something breaks at the weekend, cheap hosting is a perfectly sensible choice and we will tell you so. What we sell is not the server. It is not having to think about any of that.

  • 01

Sites break quietly. A plugin update conflicts, a form stops sending, a payment page throws an error. Nothing goes visibly down, so nobody notices for weeks.

  • 02

Backups are worthless until tested. Most people have never tried restoring one. The moment you need it is a poor time to find out it does not work.

  • 03

Security is maintenance, not a product. The overwhelming majority of small site compromises are unpatched software, not a targeted attack.

What is included

What we actually do each month

Not a feature list from a hosting company. This is the work.

Managed hosting

UK based hosting sized for your traffic, with a certificate, a CDN where it helps, and performance that does not embarrass you on a phone connection.

Updates, tested

Core, plugin and theme updates applied on a schedule, checked afterwards, and rolled back if something breaks. Not applied blind and hoped for.

Backups that restore

Daily off site backups, retained, and periodically restored to prove they work. A backup nobody has tested is a promise, not a safeguard.

Security and monitoring

Hardening, malware scanning and uptime monitoring, with someone alerted when the site stops responding. Usually we know before you do.

Small changes included

Price updates, opening hours, a new photo, a page of new copy. The things too small to raise a project for but annoying to do yourself.

You own everything

Your domain, your hosting account, your content. If you want to leave, we help you move rather than making it difficult.

Moving to us

Three steps, and your site does not go down

Migrations are routine. The only visible change should be that it gets faster.

01

Look at what you have

Where it is hosted now, what it runs on, and whether anything needs fixing before it moves. We will tell you if it does not need moving.

02

Copy and test

We set the site up on the new hosting and test it properly before anything points at it. Your live site keeps running throughout.

03

Switch over

The domain is pointed at the new host, usually outside working hours. We watch it for the first few days.

How we work

No lock in, and no hostage taking

A lot of small businesses end up trapped, unable to leave a provider because nobody will tell them where the domain is registered or hand over the login. We register things in your name, give you the access, and document what is where. If you leave, we help you leave properly.

If you cannot walk away from your web supplier, you did not hire a supplier.

Why we set accounts up in your name
Accounts in your nameDomain and hosting registered to you, with the credentials handed over.
Month to monthNo annual lock in. Give notice and we will help you migrate.
A person, not a ticket queueYou email someone who knows your setup.
Tested restoresBackups are periodically restored, not just taken.
Honest adviceIf cheaper hosting suits you better, we will tell you that.

The underlying platform

What you are actually running on

UK based infrastructure from ISO accredited partners. Included in a managed plan, and available on its own if you would rather run it yourself.

Control panelcPanel
Storage40GB, scalable if you need more
BandwidthUp to 600GB monthly transfer
Email accountsUnlimited, except on subdomain based hosting
DatabasesUnlimited MySQL
SecurityImunify360 malware scanning and threat protection
BackupsDaily, off site, seven day retention
PerformanceSSD only, current PHP versions, server side tuning
MonitoringOver forty health checks running continuously

ISO accredited

Our hosting partners hold ISO 27001 for information security, ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental management. Useful when a client asks you to evidence it.

Renewable energy

The platform runs on 100 percent renewable energy. Not a reason on its own to choose a host, but it costs you nothing and increasingly turns up in supplier questionnaires.

UK based

Data stays in the UK, which matters if you hold customer records and are asked where they are processed. Migration for existing clients is included at no extra cost.

Specifications are for the standard plan and can be scaled. Ask if you need something larger.

Common questions

The things people ask first

Usually about price, lock in, and what happens when something breaks.

Is this cheaper than doing it myself?
No. Shared hosting costs a few pounds a month and this costs more than that. What you are buying is that updates get applied and tested, backups get checked, and somebody notices when the site stops working. If you are happy doing that yourself, do it yourself.
What happens if my site goes down?
Monitoring alerts us, and we investigate. We do not promise a specific response time on a small business plan because it would not be honest to, but in practice we usually know before you have noticed.
Do I have to have my site built by you?
No. We host sites we did not build. If the site has problems we will tell you what they are before taking it on, rather than inheriting them silently.
Can I leave?
Yes, on a month of notice, and we will help you move. Everything is in your name already, so there is nothing to prise out of us.
Do you do email hosting too?
We will set up and support business email on a proper provider, but we do not host mail ourselves. Mail on the same server as a website is a bad idea for reasons that only become apparent when it goes wrong.

Send us your site address and we will tell you what we would change.

Free, and useful whether or not you move. Sometimes the answer is that your current setup is fine.
