Why 1 Credit Doesn’t Always Equal 1 SMS
SMS is billed in “segments”. A short, plain text message usually fits into one segment, but longer messages or messages with emojis/special characters are split into two or more segments.
It’s important to remember that a single message can consist of multiple segments, depending on the number of characters used in the message and the presence of special characters.
A standard segment consists of 160 characters. If you compose a long message, it will be split into multiple segments and charged per segment.
Using special characters or emojis will convert the message to Unicode, reducing the number of characters per segment to 70.
Each segment uses part of your credit balance, so one SMS on screen may use more than one segment behind the scenes.
So…That’s why 1 credit does not always equal exactly 1 SMS, but your total balance always goes down in line with what’s actually sent.
What does this mean in £ terms?
On our current SMS pricing, each message segment works out at roughly 1.2p (this can vary slightly by country, but it’s a good guide).
Using these two examples:
1) Short, plain text message (1 segment)
Hi Sarah, this is Co Name A confirming your appointment on 12 March at 3:30pm. Reply YES to confirm or NO to cancel. Thank you.
Uses 1 segment
Approx cost: about 1.2p
From £1 you can send roughly 83 of these (think “around 80 short texts”)
2) Longer message with emojis (3 segments)
Hi Sarah 👋 this is Co Name A confirming your appointment on 12 March at 3:30pm. Please arrive 5 minutes early. Reply YES to confirm or NO to cancel. Thank you! 😊
Uses 3 segments
Approx cost: about 3.6p per message (3 × 1.2p)
From £1 you can send roughly 27 of these (think “around 25–30 longer / emoji texts”)
So if you mostly send short, simple reminders, £1 goes a long way. If you send longer messages with emojis, each one just uses a few more segments from your balance.
